The vest is the most underrated garment a cyclist owns, and the one that saves a ride most often. It cuts the wind at the chest, which is where the cold bites most on a descent, leaves the arms free to move, and folds up so small it fits in a jersey pocket so you always have it with you.
When to use the vest
In the shoulder seasons, on cool mornings that warm up mid-ride, and above all on mountain passes, where you climb sweating and descend frozen. You put it on for the descent and take it off for the next climb, barely stopping.
