In the shoulder seasons and the first cold hours, a long-sleeve or thermal jersey keeps the temperature without giving up breathability. The choice depends less on the calendar and more on the real temperature you usually ride in.

What to wear under the jersey

Underneath goes a technical base layer, not a cotton one. Its job is to separate sweat from the skin and move it to the jersey to keep you dry. In summer a thin or sleeveless base layer is enough. In the cold, a thermal base layer makes the difference.
