Nilit Heat and the fibers that harness body heat

Some fibers insulate by trapping air, like Thermolite, and some fibers go a step further: they harness the heat your body already generates and return it to you. Nilit Heat is one of the best-known in this second family.

Nilit Heat is a nylon fiber that incorporates coffee charcoal, obtained from coffee bean waste, along with a mineral additive. This charcoal and mineral absorb body heat and retain it, and also reflect part of the thermal energy back to the body as far-infrared radiation. In short: it converts your own heat into more heat.

Manufacturer data reports an increase of up to 10 °C compared to a reference fabric, measured in the laboratory. With your feet on the street in the middle of winter, the exact number matters less than the idea: the fiber works in your favor instead of just insulating.

And there's an extra: the coffee charcoal provides an antibacterial and deodorizing effect, so in addition to keeping you warm, it helps the sock smell less. That's why this type of fiber performs so well close to the skin, in base layers and in winter socks.
